The lanolin comes from New Zealand wool, the mānuka honey and propolis from New Zealand hives, and the lupin from the South Island. The brand's own line for it is nurtured by New Zealand, and the sourcing is the reason the range exists.

Lanolin is the waxy oil sheep produce to keep their fleece waterproof, cleaned and purified to EP grade for skincare. It works as an occlusive, sitting on the surface and slowing the water loss that leaves skin tight and cracked.

That makes it useful on hands that are washed all day, on heels, elbows and knuckles, and anywhere the skin has gone past dry. Because it comes from wool, it is not suitable if you avoid animal-derived ingredients.

All three are 100g tubes of the same idea, a lanolin cream for everything and everywhere, and they differ in what is carried with the lanolin.

Lanolin Cream is the plain one, with vitamin E, collagen, placenta and aloe leaf. Mānuka Honey & Lanolin adds mānuka honey, sweet almond oil and marine collagen, and is the richest. Lupin & Lanolin is the lightest, with lupin, jojoba oil, kiwifruit seed oil and vitamin E.

They are lightweight and absorb quickly, so they do not leave the greasy film that puts people off using a heavy cream on their face.

MGO is methylglyoxal, the compound mānuka honey is graded on, and MGO300+ means at least 300mg of it per kilogram of honey.

Both are pH tested between 6.5 and 8.5 and RDA tested between 60 and 80, which sits at the gentle end of the abrasiveness scale, so the Whitening one is lifting surface stain with bamboo charcoal rather than scrubbing enamel.

The formula is the same mānuka honey and lanolin with SPF 15+. The stick is 4g and goes on in one swipe, and the tube is 15g and is squeezed on.

Sticks suit a pocket, a school bag or a glovebox, and come in a mix and match three or six pack. Tubes hold nearly four times as much and let you put the balm exactly where it is needed, which is the better buy if you use one at a desk or beside the bed.

They carry SPF 15+, which covers the lips the balm is actually on, and only while it is there.

Lips burn easily and have no melanin to speak of, so reapply after eating, drinking and swimming, and put a proper sunscreen on the rest of your face. The balm is not a substitute for one.
