Sharp, green and faintly peppery, basil is the oil people reach for when the desk light is still on at eleven at night. It is bright rather than soothing, and it wakes a room up.
Ocimum basilicum, steam distilled from the whole plant in India, gives a clean top note that lifts off quickly. Four to six drops in a diffuser is plenty for a study or a home office, and it pairs naturally with rosemary, peppermint and lemon.
Basil is potent and needs dilution before it goes anywhere near skin. It is one to avoid during pregnancy.
