Matakana Superfoods' certified-organic Barley Grass Powder (a.k.a Barley Leaf Powder) is a natural, nutritious, green powder making it an ideal plant-based option for the whole family.
Our growing partner specializes in growing and processing certified organic whole-food plant powders, such as barley leaf and wheatgrass, with origins in the Canterbury Plains. They manage 600 hectares of organically farmed land, producing leaf crops under strict organic practices—no synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, or fungicides.
Harvests occur at the crop’s peak vitality, preserving high levels of nutrients like minerals, amino acids, enzymes, and chlorophyll. They harvest their greens at the optimal growth stage for nutrient density, which is typically just before or right at the barley grass’s "jointing stage", when the grass is about 7–10 inches tall (roughly 8–12 days after germination).
They use hot air-drying systems—advanced, thermodynamically engineered—designed to “snap capture” plants at their freshest for high nutritional retention. Processing from field to mill happens in under 24 hours, ensuring freshness. This timing ensures the highest concentration of vitamins, chlorophyll, and antioxidants before the grass starts to mature or flower, which can reduce nutrient content.
